My journey into the world of papermaking began While watching an old Roman Polanski movie, the ninth gate. During the film, johnny depp’s Character, corso, visits a bookbinder, The ceniza Brothers, in toledo, Spain - to verify the authenticity of his client’s copy of the nine gates of the kingdom of shadows (as they’re the ones who originally sold it to the previous owner). while speaking with the Ceniza Twins, one of them makes a reference to the book being printed on rag paper, which sparked my curiosity - what is rag paper?… and down the rabbit hole I went, learning everything I could about papermaking before the Industrial Age.
